June 2014
Roncalli Class of 2014

On May 25th, Roncalli graduated its 46th senior class. Ninety-six students received their diplomas conferred by Roncalli President John Stelzer. The commencement address was given by Roncalli teacher and 2007 alumnus Mr. Paul Schweigl. The class of 2014 received $1.8 million in renewable scholarships to further their education.  Congratulations to all the graduates and their families and thank you to all who contributed to their success and they continue to pursue their dreams.
Technology Gets an Upgrade
Roncalli High School is very pleased to announce a generous gift from Dr. Ken and Amy Katz to its technology initiative at the high school. Thanks to their gift, Roncalli will be able to provide a personal computer to each student. In addition, Roncalli will continue to provide network and classroom improvements which will improve learning opportunities across the curriculum.

John Stelzer, President of Roncalli, is very pleased to begin the school's second generation of personal computers for students. "Our school was blessed four years ago by generous benefactors who shared our vision to make 21st Century information and research available to our entire student body. This year, we are doubly blessed through this tremendous contribution by the Katz family." Through this gift, Roncalli students, regardless of their economic backgrounds, will be prepared for the technological world after high school. We hope to continue to expand our curricular offerings, encourage additional online coursework, and provide uniform access to high quality technology for all students.

Ken Katz is a 1988 graduate of Roncalli High School and the founder and president of Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin. He and his wife Amy have been active supporters of Roncalli High School and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School. According to John Stelzer, "our school is fortunate to receive support from alumni, parents of alumni, businesses, and our area parishes. On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, we would like to thank Ken and Amy for their support of our school and this gift of technology!"

Roncalli to name new basketball court "Kersten Court"
Roncalli proudly announces the naming of the basketball court in honor of Jim & Marge Kersten. "Thanks to all the generosity of alumni and benefactors, we will be renovating our gym area and bleachers in May of 2015. During the quiet portion of our campaign, it was very encouraging to hear the tremendous support that Mr. Kersten and his family have in our community. Several donors have made gifts and pledges already in excess of $200,000 to provide the naming opportunity.

Jim Kersten arrived at Roncalli in 1965 and acted as athletic director, teacher, and coach of many sports. He served as the Roncalli basketball coach from 1965 until 1991. Before arriving in Manitowoc in 1965, Jim graduated in 1960 from Marquette University where he lettered three years for Coach Jack Nagel and Ed Hickey. Kersten coached at Winneconne High School from 1960-62 and at Racine St. Catherine High School from 1963-65. He accumulated an impressive 328 career wins as a head coach.

According to Roncalli President John Stelzer, "Coach Kersten has had a tremendous influence on our school and the many students, alumni, parents, and staff members that have called Roncalli home. It is amazing to think about the enormous job of starting a new school and athletic program from scratch. Mr. Kersten was a tireless worker who deserves to be honored for establishing our programs, training many coaches, and establishing a proud legacy of Roncalli athletics." The naming of "Kersten Court" represents the appreciation of Jim's dedication, leadership, and service to Roncalli High School.

The gym renovation is part of a strategic fund campaign at Roncalli. The renovation of the athletic facility will include the replacement of the gym floor, new bleachers, scoreboards, and locker room renovations. The athletic facility is used daily by most students. It is utilized for physical education classes, team practices, youth programs, and several community events. Roncalli will celebrate its 50th Anniversary during the 2015-16 school year. The dedication of "Kersten Court" will be one of the many events planned to embrace the school's history
